Conscious Beauty: Ethique Shampoo & Conditioner Bars, No Waste Hair Routine

Just this past year I have been guided to make some changes in my life, some of those changes involve my diet, health, and the products I’m using. For those that know me, know that I have A LOT of hair, literally enough hair for three people. My hair is extremely thick, curly, and long, so with a lot of hair comes the use of a lot of shampoo and conditioner.

Although I loved the conditioner and shampoo I was using, I couldn’t help but notice the amount of plastic bottles I was going through on a monthly basis. I would always throw these bottles into the recycling bin, wondering if in fact they will ever be recycled or just somehow end up in a landfill. I decided I wanted to make a change in my routine and began searching for a shampoo and conditioner that not only could manage my hair, but also had little to no waste and safe, gentle ingredients.

After researching some different companies and products I decided to try Ethique because they are plastic free, plant based, cruelty free, sustainable, and kind to your wallet! Another great thing about Ethique is all of their packaging is plastic free and compostable with no chemical coatings. This means all their boxes and labels will degrade in both the landfill or compost bin. You can also recycle them, though it’d be great to compost. To try it- you can bury them in your garden and watch them disappear over a few months.

In April of 2020 I ordered two shampoo bars (Healing Kiwi & Frizz Wangler) and two conditioner bars (Guardian & Wonderbar).

The shampoo is very easy to use as it lathers quickly and effortlessly spreads throughout the hair. The shampoo bars are large in size and just a few light strokes of the shampoo along your scalp will be enough to shampoo your whole head. The scents from the shampoo are gentle and are typically citrus or coconut scented which I like. I am not a fan of heavy scented shampoo that sits on your hair like perfume. Now that I have been using this shampoo, it is difficult to use anything else. The ingredients are so gentle and they do a fabulous job of washing your hair and making it feel clean, without drying it out!

The conditioner bars were pleasantly surprising and performed beyond my expectations. I was initially worried that with all of the gentle plant based ingredients, the formula wouldn’t be enough to soften and detangle my unruly hair. To my surprise, I found these conditioner bars to be very effective in conditioning and detangling the hair. Even with the gentle ingredients, my hair feels soft, silky, and detangled after using these conditioner bars. The conditioner makes the hair easy to brush and I loved the way my natural hair looked after it dried using these conditioners, it helped keep my curls together and I had less frizz.

The one downside I have found with these conditioners is that it can be a challenge distributing the conditioner throughout all of my hair. I have so much hair, that rubbing a bar of conditioner around my entire head of hair can be difficult and time consuming. It takes me about 5 minutes longer of adding conditioner into my hair than it did using a plastic pump with my former conditioner. This is the only con I have found from my switch to a no waste hair routine and for all the other benefits I receive from using these bars it is well worth it to me. I’d rather take a few extra minutes in the shower than have to throw another plastic container away.

For those who don’t have tons if hair, this shouldn’t even be an issue for you. For those with longer or thick hair, I have found the best way to distribute the conditioner is to split your hair in two sections and run the conditioner bar along one section at a time. I have also found letting the conditioner sit in your hair for a few minutes before washing it out helps it soften and detangle further.

I’m proud to say for four months now, all I have been using is Ethique. I still have not had to purchase any additional bars as my shampoo and conditioner bars I purchased back from April are still only half the size after four months of use! This has not only helped me save on plastic, but I have saved so much money as well because these products last longer than average water-based shampoos and conditioners. Overall, I have been very satisfied with Ethique and truly believe they are a revolutionary company.

I am always looking into new sustainable products and ways that I can cut down my usage of plastics; I am eager to share them with my followers and readers. It brings me joy to share my experience in hopes that others may convert from using plastic daily in their beauty routines. We can still find ways for self care and loving our bodies without hurting Mama Gaia in the process. #giveupthebottle
